Synopsis

In the tumultuous landscape of 1976 Laos, freshly under Communist rule, the reluctant 72-year-old Dr. Siri Paiboun is thrust into the role of national coroner. Despite his lack of formal training, Siri possesses an insatiable curiosity and a wry disregard for party hierarchy, qualities that make him uniquely suited to his new, grim profession. Aiding (and often pestering) him are the spirits of the dead, who offer cryptic clues to the mysteries he must unravel. His investigations plunge him into a series of bizarre cases: from perplexing deaths initially attributed to bear attacks, to the shocking demise of a government official who seemingly leapt from a seventh-story window, and the grim discovery of two charred bodies amidst a helicopter wreck in a sacred temple. As Dr. Siri peels back the layers of deception and superstition, he exposes the unsettling truth that beneath the veneer of a 'Communist paradise,' lies a complex web of corruption, secrets, and spiritual unrest.
