Synopsis

In Martha Wells's 'The Edge of Worlds,' the serene Indigo Cloud court of the Raksura, a society of shape-shifting creatures, finds its peace shattered by the arrival of groundlings from the Empire of Kish. These groundlings seek help to access a sealed ancient city they believe holds the secrets of their ancestors. However, the Raksura fear the city is of Forerunner origin, echoing a past encounter that unleashed an unstoppable evil. Troubled by ominous visions of a disaster threatening all courts in the Reaches, the Raksura mentors suspect this ancient city is at the heart of the impending danger. Consort Moon, an orphan newly integrated into the Raksura family, and sister queen Jade join an expedition to investigate. The perilous journey is further complicated when the predatory Fell, ancient enemies of the Raksura, also discover the city. As the Raksura race against time to contain the unknown threat, they face the terrifying possibility that their very efforts might inadvertently unleash a cataclysmic force upon their world, intertwining their fate with forgotten histories and ancient perils.
