Synopsis

Keiichiro Hirano's "A Man" unfurls a gripping philosophical mystery when Rie, a young mother, discovers that the man she loved, married, and had a child with, Daisuke, was not who he claimed to be. After his sudden death, a routine check reveals his true identity was stolen. Driven by a desire to understand the man she shared her life with, Rie hires a lawyer, Akira Kido, to uncover the truth. Kido's investigation delves deep into the lives of both the deceased "Daisuke" and the actual man whose identity was assumed, unraveling layers of sorrow, deception, and the profound human need for a new beginning. The novel brilliantly explores the fluidity of identity, the masks people wear, and the existential question of whether the self can truly be defined by name, past, or memory, forcing readers to confront what truly constitutes a person.
