Synopsis

Ambassador Mahit Dzmare arrives at the heart of the Teixcalaanli Empire, its glittering capital, to take up her new diplomatic post. Her mission is critical: to protect her fiercely independent mining station, Lsel, from the rapacious expansionist tendencies of the Empire. However, her predecessor, Yskandr, was murdered under suspicious circumstances, and no one in the intricate, power-hungry Teixcalaanli court will admit it wasn't an accident. Plunged into a labyrinth of political intrigue and cultural assimilation, Mahit must quickly adapt to a society that values poetry and elaborate social rituals as much as military might. As she unearths dangerous truths about Yskandr's death, she finds herself struggling against the Empire's seductive allure, even as she herself harbors a profound, technological secret that could either doom Lsel to annexation or provide its salvation. Caught between loyalty to her home and the intoxicating pull of an alien culture, Mahit must navigate a deadly game where her own life, and the future of her people, hang in the balance.
