Synopsis

On a remote, meticulously engineered island where humanity has eradicated crime, violence, and suffering for three centuries, a single, impossible act shatters the manufactured peace: a murder. The last vestiges of mankind live in an idyllic, albeit controlled, utopia, guided by the mysterious 'Architect'. When a body is discovered, it plunges the community into a crisis, for they have no concept of motive, malice, or the means to investigate such an atrocity. Young investigator Emory, raised in an era of absolute harmony, must confront the darkest depths of human nature to solve a crime that literally shouldn't exist. As the fragile veneer of their perfect world begins to crack, long-buried secrets and the true, unsettling nature of their utopian society are brought to light, revealing that the killer's identity might be the key to humanity's very survival.

Critical Reception

"Following the acclaimed success of 'The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle', Stuart Turton delivers another high-concept and intricately plotted mystery, further cementing his status as a compelling voice in contemporary speculative fiction and crime."
