Synopsis

Stanley Yelnats IV is an innocent boy from a family plagued by generations of bad luck. Wrongly accused of stealing a pair of famous sneakers, he is sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention facility in the desolate Texas desert. Under the scorching sun, Stanley and the other boys are forced to dig one large hole every day, ostensibly to build character. However, Stanley soon suspects that the mysterious Warden and her staff are searching for something specific beneath the dry lakebed. As he endures the harsh conditions and the eccentric characters among his fellow campers, Stanley forms an unlikely friendship with the quiet and ostracized Zero. Their bond strengthens as they unravel the camp's dark secrets, intertwining the Yelnats family curse, a legendary outlaw named Kissin' Kate Barlow, and a hidden treasure. Louis Sachar masterfully weaves together multiple timelines and narratives, revealing a poignant tale of fate, injustice, and the enduring power of friendship and self-discovery, culminating in a thrilling climax that promises to break generations of bad luck.
