Synopsis

Set in the untamed American West just after the Louisiana Purchase, "The Prairie" embarks on a perilous journey with the Bush family as they venture westward from the Mississippi. Their path intertwines with Natty Bumppo, 'the trapper,' now in his late eighties and a legendary figure. Natty guides the family through the treacherous frontier, but their struggles soon escalate. Amidst a planned marriage between Ellen Wade and Ishmael Bush's son, Ellen falls for the wandering beehunter, Paul Hover. Their secret rendezvous is cut short by a Sioux kidnapping, a near escape that marks just the beginning of their trials. Raids, stolen horses, and relentless dangers force the group, under Natty's sagacious leadership, to seek refuge on a fortified hill. As the narrative unfolds, a web of kidnappings, torture, murder, and betrayals challenges their very survival. This final installment of the acclaimed Leatherstocking Tales offers a poignant farewell to Natty Bumppo, honoring his storied past while exploring the emotional landscape of an aging hero. Cooper masterfully depicts the raw, undomesticated prairie, using memorable characters to explore humanity's impact on nature and the profound conflicts inherent in the expansion of civilization.

Critical Reception
