Synopsis

Set in the desolate Irish Midlands of the 1850s, 'The Wonder' unravels a chilling mystery surrounding eleven-year-old Anna O'Donnell. After months without food, Anna claims to subsist solely on divine manna, a phenomenon quickly dubbed a miracle by her devout community. Enter Lib Wright, an English nurse with a skeptical, scientific mind, hired to observe Anna for two weeks and determine if she is a fraud. As Lib meticulously watches the seemingly healthy child, she finds herself entangled in a web of fervent faith, local superstition, and a family's desperate secrets. With a journalist eager for a sensational story lurking, Lib races against time to uncover the truth behind Anna's inexplicable survival, fearing that what appears to be a miracle is, in fact, a slow, deliberate act of murder unfolding before her very eyes. Donoghue masterfully crafts a tense psychological thriller that explores themes of belief, sacrifice, and the clash between science and fanaticism in a post-Famine Ireland.
