Synopsis

Aravind Adiga's 'Selection Day' plunges into the cutthroat world of Mumbai cricket through the eyes of two brothers, Radha and Manju Kumar. Driven by their obsessive, financially desperate father, Tommy, they are groomed from a young age to become India's next cricketing superstars. While Radha, the elder, embodies the natural talent and fierce discipline, Manju, the younger, grapples with his own identity, wrestling with a burgeoning scientific curiosity and an unacknowledged burgeoning sexuality that clashes with his father's singular vision. As they navigate the pressures of their demanding training and the intricate social hierarchies of their sport, Manju finds himself drawn to the privileged and self-assured rival, Javed Ansari, forcing him to confront his own desires and challenge the predefined path set by his father. Adiga masterfully explores themes of class, ambition, parental expectation, and the search for selfhood in a rapidly changing India, all against the vibrant backdrop of a city obsessed with cricket.
