Synopsis

Born under an inauspicious sign that foretells misfortune, Mohun Biswas embarks on a lifelong, often tragicomic, quest for selfhood and autonomy in post-colonial Trinidad. From an early, accidental transgression that leads to his father's death and the dissolution of his family, Mr. Biswas finds himself adrift. His attempt to flirt with a woman inadvertently leads to his marriage into the sprawling, domineering, and stifling Tulsi family, where he is perpetually reliant and marginalized. Enduring endless indignities and setbacks, both self-inflicted and systemic, Mr. Biswas harbors one burning ambition: to own a house of his own. This seemingly simple desire becomes a monumental struggle against social constraints, financial hardship, and his own character flaws, ultimately shaping him into a man determined to forge an independent existence outside the shadow of others. Naipaul masterfully weaves a poignant and darkly humorous tale of one man's defiant pursuit of dignity.

Critical Reception
