Synopsis

Ivan Turgenev's poignant novella, "First Love," unfolds as an adult Vladimir Petrovich recounts the indelible summer that shaped his youth. At sixteen, on the cusp of manhood, Vladimir finds his world irrevocably altered by the captivating Zinaida Alexandrovna Zasyekina, a spirited and enigmatic twenty-one-year-old living next door. He falls deeply, hopelessly in love, experiencing the exhilarating peaks of adolescent passion and the agonizing pangs of jealousy. Zinaida, however, is a woman of complex charms, accustomed to the adoration of many older, more worldly suitors, including a dashing military officer, a poet, and a count. Vladimir, though smitten, finds himself merely one of several hopefuls vying for her capricious affections. As he navigates the tumultuous landscape of his first true love, he discovers bitter truths about desire, betrayal, and the harsh realities that lie beneath the surface of seemingly perfect romance. This masterfully rendered tale explores the intoxicating power of young love, its inherent disappointments, and the inevitable, tragic lessons that mark the transition from innocence to experience.
