Synopsis

Robert Luczak, an American magazine editor, embarks on a seemingly straightforward assignment to Calcutta (now Kolkata), India, tasked with recovering the lost manuscripts of the mysterious and reclusive poet, M. Das. However, what begins as a literary quest quickly spirals into a harrowing descent into the city's labyrinthine depths, where poverty, squalor, and an palpable undercurrent of dread define daily existence. Luczak, accompanied by his wife and infant daughter, finds himself increasingly entangled with the ancient and terrifying cult of Kali, the Hindu goddess of destruction and time. As he uncovers the sinister truths behind the poet's disappearance and the cult's resurgence, Luczak is forced to confront unimaginable horrors, confronting the chilling reality of ritual sacrifice, a burgeoning plague of violence, and the ultimate fragility of life. Simmons masterfully crafts a visceral and unsettling narrative, blurring the lines between cultural shock, psychological terror, and genuine supernatural malevolence, painting a vivid and unforgettable portrait of a city consumed by its darkest gods.
