Synopsis

Alone and adrift after her husband's death, an elderly woman named Vesta moves to a remote cabin. One day, while walking her dog, she discovers a cryptic note: "Her name was Magda. Nobody will ever know who killed her. It wasn't me. Here is her dead body." The chilling message, accompanied by no actual body, plunges Vesta into a spiraling obsession. With no internet or reliable connections, she embarks on a bizarre, self-directed investigation, meticulously crafting elaborate backstories and potential scenarios for Magda's life and death. As her theories grow increasingly complex and outlandish, the lines between reality and her fertile, troubled imagination begin to blur. Vesta's isolated mind conjures a world of suspects, motives, and dark secrets, forcing the reader to question whether the truth lies within her fabricated narrative or in a much more unsettling, perhaps self-inflicted, reality. This novel is a darkly humorous and unsettling exploration of loneliness, the human need for narrative, and the unreliable nature of perception.
