Synopsis

Shevek, a brilliant physicist from the anarchist moon Anarres, embarks on an unprecedented journey to its mother planet, Urras—a world of opulent wealth and stark class divisions. Born into a society founded on principles of communal ownership and individual freedom, Shevek grapples with the subtle oppressions of his own supposedly liberated homeland, where intellectual innovation can be stifled by collective conformity. His quest for a unified theory of time is also a deeper search for intellectual freedom and a bridge between these two diametrically opposed civilizations. Upon arrival on Urras, Shevek is initially celebrated but quickly finds himself a pawn in complex political games, discovering that liberty, whether communal or individual, comes with its own unique set of challenges and compromises. Le Guin's masterful narrative explores profound questions about freedom, property, revolution, and the very nature of human society, challenging readers to re-examine their own assumptions about utopia and dystopia.
