Synopsis

In Elizabeth Strout's acclaimed novel, 'The Burgess Boys,' the lives of Jim and Bob Burgess are forever tethered to a haunting childhood tragedy: the freak accident that claimed their father's life in their Maine hometown. Jim, a formidable corporate lawyer, has always overshadowed his kindhearted brother, Bob, a legal aid attorney who, despite everything, idolizes him. Both brothers escaped the confines of Shirley Falls for the bustling anonymity of New York, believing they had left their past behind. However, the fragile peace is shattered when their distraught sister, Susan, calls them back to their roots. Her teenage son, Zach, has committed a deeply unsettling act, igniting a firestorm in their insular community and forcing the brothers to confront not only Zach's predicament but also the long-buried resentments, sibling rivalries, and unspoken grief that have defined their relationship. As old wounds surface and new conflicts arise, the Burgess family is compelled to navigate the complex landscape of loyalty, blame, and forgiveness, ultimately revealing the profound and often painful ties that bind them to each other and to the home they tried so hard to escape.
