Synopsis

Lord Peter Wimsey, accompanied by his faithful manservant Bunter, finds himself stranded in the desolate, mist-shrouded flatlands of East Anglia after a wrong turn. Seeking refuge, they stumble upon the ancient parish church of Fenchurch St. Paul, where they are serendipitously invited to partake in a New Year's Eve bell-ringing marathon. This intricate, almost mystical art of change ringing, with its complex mathematical patterns, immediately captivates Wimsey. However, the seemingly tranquil village soon reveals a darker undercurrent. When a long-buried corpse is discovered in a grave meant for someone else, and another villager meets a grim end, Wimsey must unravel a decades-old crime involving jewel theft and betrayal. Against the backdrop of the mesmerizing, ceaseless chimes of the church bells, Wimsey delves into a community where ancient traditions and deeply held secrets intertwine, culminating in a climactic confrontation with a past that continues to claim lives in the present. The intricate plot, rich atmosphere, and unique focus on campanology make this a distinctive entry in the Lord Peter Wimsey series.
