In the chilling heart of 1890s London, a macabre mystery unfolds when Lord Fitzroy-Hammond, buried just three weeks prior, makes a grotesque reappearance, perched atop a hansom cab. Inspector Thomas Pitt initially dismisses the grave robbing as a mere prank, but the grim jest repeats itself when the resurrected corpse is found in his family pew after a second interment. As more disinterred bodies surface, Pitt suspects a deeper, more sinister message lies beneath the ghastly charades. Meanwhile, his astute wife, Charlotte Pitt, still recovering from childbirth, finds her interest piqued when her late sister's husband, Dominic Corde, is named as a possible suspect. Their separate investigations draw them into the dark underbelly of Victorian society – Pitt delving into the squalid slums and rookeries, while Charlotte uncovers a world of political intrigue, exploitation, and moral corruption.
