Synopsis

Rennie Wilford, a young, disillusioned journalist from Toronto, finds her life unraveling after a botched surgery and a break-up. Seeking refuge and recovery, she escapes to the seemingly idyllic Caribbean island of St. Antoine. However, her arrival coincides with escalating political tensions and unrest, quickly shattering her illusions of a peaceful retreat. As the island descends into chaos and violence, Rennie becomes entangled in a dangerous web of local power struggles and political corruption, forcing her to confront the brutal realities of a world where her privileged past offers no protection. Stripped of her former identity and facing unimaginable horrors, Rennie must grapple with themes of complicity, indifference, and the raw lust for power, both sexual and political. Atwood masterfully crafts a disorienting narrative that blurs the lines between victim and observer, ultimately exploring the profound human need for genuine compassion in the face of profound bodily and psychological harm.

Critical Reception

""Bodily Harm" stands as a stark and unsettling exploration of political and personal power, solidifying Margaret Atwood's reputation for prescient, psychologically acute, and often disturbing social commentary."
