Synopsis

In the gripping second installment of the Inspector John Rebus series, a chilling murder shatters the superficial tranquility of Edinburgh. Detective Inspector John Rebus is called to a squalid squat where a young junkie lies dead, his body meticulously arranged in a ritualistic manner. Ignored by a society eager to embrace new prosperity and dismissive of its marginalized, this case quickly becomes more than a routine investigation for Rebus. As he delves into the city's dark underbelly, populated by addicts, derelicts, and those society has forgotten, Rebus uncovers a sinister connection between the squalor and the city's gleaming new facade. His relentless pursuit of truth forces him to confront not only a cunning killer but also powerful, dangerous forces that threaten to engulf him. This deeply atmospheric and psychologically complex novel sees Rebus fighting for justice, and ultimately, for his own life, as he navigates the murky waters where morality and ambition collide.

Critical Reception

"Solidifying its place within a 'superior series' (The New York Times Book Review), 'Hide and Seek' further establishes Ian Rankin as one of 'the best crime novelists at work today' (Michael Connelly), praised for its gritty realism and incisive social commentary."
