A Constellation of Vital Phenomena

Synopsis

In the ravaged Chechen village of Eldar in 2004, eight-year-old Havaa witnesses the brutal abduction of her father by Russian soldiers. Her neighbor, Akhmed, a kind but ineffectual man, discovers the traumatized child hiding in the woods and knows he must protect her. His only hope lies with Sonja Rabina, a fiercely independent and emotionally guarded surgeon struggling to maintain a dilapidated, abandoned hospital. Though initially reluctant to take in the strangers, Sonja's world begins to unravel and re-form over five extraordinary days, as the lives of Havaa, Akhmed, and Sonja become inextricably linked. Marra masterfully weaves together timelines, revealing the profound and often painful history that binds these characters, painting a poignant portrait of resilience, unexpected kinship, and the enduring human spirit amidst the devastation of war. It's a powerful exploration of how vital phenomena—life itself—persists even in the most desperate circumstances.
