Synopsis

Cipriano Algor, an aging potter, leads a quiet life with his daughter and son-in-law, crafting traditional clay wares for 'The Centre,' an all-encompassing, constantly expanding conglomerate that dictates modern existence. His world is upended when The Centre, in its relentless pursuit of novelty, deems his pottery obsolete. Undeterred and driven by a quiet defiance, Cipriano and his family embark on a new venture, creating unique ceramic figurines. To their astonishment, The Centre places a colossal order, offering a glimmer of hope for their livelihood. Yet, this hope proves fleeting when, upon the order's completion, The Centre abruptly cancels, claiming no market for their art. With his craft rendered irrelevant and few alternatives, Cipriano reluctantly moves into the Centre's sterile, soulless residential complex. There, amidst the alienating perfection, he uncovers a profound and horrifying secret hidden deep within the artificial city's bowels – a truth that threatens to dismantle not only his perception of The Centre but the very essence of human existence within its meticulously controlled walls.

Critical Reception

"Jose Saramago's distinctive narrative voice transforms 'The Cave' into a potent and disquieting allegorical critique of modern consumerism, corporate power, and the dehumanization of society."
