Synopsis

Richard Cadogan, a poet and aspiring bon vivant, arrives in Oxford anticipating a serene holiday, only to find himself embroiled in a bizarre mystery. Late one night, he discovers the lifeless body of an elderly woman in a seemingly deserted toyshop, only to be struck down himself. When consciousness returns, the toyshop has vanished without a trace, replaced by an unassuming grocery store. Understandably, the police are highly skeptical of his outlandish tale. Fortunately, Cadogan's former schoolmate, the brilliant and eccentric Oxford don and amateur detective Gervase Fen, takes an immediate, if amused, interest in the perplexing incident. Convinced that an extraordinary truth lies beneath the surface, Fen and Cadogan embark on a whirlwind investigation through the ancient streets and colleges of Oxford. Their pursuit of clues leads them through a labyrinth of misdirection and eccentric characters, where every new discovery only deepens the enigma of the disappearing toyshop, ultimately revealing a delightfully intricate and dangerous plot.

Critical Reception

"Edmund Crispin's 'The Moving Toyshop' is revered as a quintessential work of Golden Age crime fiction, celebrated for its inventive and whimsical plotting, sparkling wit, and the indelible character of Gervase Fen."
