Synopsis

In James Herbert's chilling novel "Shrine," the seemingly miraculous takes a terrifying turn. The story centers on Alice Pagett, a young deaf-mute girl living in the quiet English village of Bannock. One fateful day, Alice experiences a vision of the Virgin Mary beneath an ancient oak tree, and suddenly, she can hear and speak. More astonishingly, she begins to perform genuine miracles, healing the sick and restoring the afflicted. The site quickly transforms into a global shrine, drawing thousands of pilgrims seeking solace and cure. However, the extraordinary events soon reveal a sinister undercurrent. The "Lady in White" Alice communes with is not the benevolent figure she appears to be, and Alice herself, no longer the innocent child, becomes an unwitting conduit for an ancient, malevolent force. The novel expertly blends religious fervor with visceral horror, delving into themes of faith, deception, and the insidious nature of evil, as the village and its faithful are drawn deeper into a demonic trap.

Critical Reception
