Synopsis

Toru Okada's ordinary life in suburban Tokyo is irrevocably shattered when his cat, Noboru Wataya, vanishes without a trace. Shortly thereafter, his wife, Kumiko, also disappears, leaving behind only a cryptic message. As Toru embarks on a quest to find them, his mundane existence unravels into a labyrinthine journey through a surreal landscape populated by eccentric characters and unsettling events. He encounters a psychic teenager, a manipulative politician, a philosophical prostitute, and a former soldier with gruesome war stories, all of whom offer fragments of truth that hint at a deeper, darker reality. Through a dry well in his backyard, and a series of increasingly bizarre telephone calls, Toru delves into the hidden currents of memory, violence, and identity, forcing him to confront both his own past and the shadowed history of Japan. This compelling narrative blurs the lines between reality and dream, transforming a simple search into a profound exploration of loss, connection, and the unseen forces that shape human destiny.
