Synopsis

In Peter Watts' 'Maelstrom,' the second installment of the Rifters Trilogy, humanity faces the devastating aftermath of a catastrophic decision. A preemptive nuclear strike, aimed at eradicating an ancient, biosphere-threatening microbe inadvertently unleashed from deep-sea vents, has instead ignited a global cataclysm. Millions perished in the ensuing tsunamis, and North America's west coast lies in ruins, fostering a chaotic landscape ripe for new dangers. Amidst this desolation, a mysterious figure rises from the ocean depths, drawing refugees to a burgeoning cult. Simultaneously, a burgeoning, unseen intelligence stirs within the ruins of the global internet, reaching out to Lenie Clarke. Presumed dead, Lenie is a rifter—one of the amphibious humans originally responsible for unearthing the microbe. Driven by an incandescent rage and equipped with cybernetic enhancements, she returns, not as a savior, but as a harbinger of further devastation. For Lenie, having already lost everything, the entire world has become mere collateral damage in her personal reckoning, threatening to plunge an already teetering civilization into its final, irreversible collapse.

Critical Reception

"Praised for its visceral blend of cyberpunk noir and biological horror, 'Maelstrom' is a fiercely intelligent and unflinching exploration of human folly and ecological retribution."
