Synopsis

In the gripping ninth installment of Ian Rankin's Inspector Rebus series, 'The Hanging Garden' plunges John Rebus into a maelstrom of international crime and personal torment. As organized crime casts a dark shadow over Scotland with drugs, extortion, and human trafficking, Rebus finds himself profoundly compromised when he rescues a young Bosnian girl forced into prostitution. His personal involvement, a golden rule broken, sets him on a dangerous path. Simultaneously, he's tasked with hunting an elderly Nazi accused of heinous war crimes, forcing him to confront the depths of human evil. However, the stakes escalate catastrophically when his own daughter is brutally injured in a gangland attack, a stark warning for Rebus to back off. Pushed to his breaking point, the dedicated detective is driven not by justice, but by an insatiable thirst for revenge, potentially leading him to make a deal with the devil himself.
