Synopsis

In Olen Steinhauer's critically acclaimed series, "Victory Square" plunges readers into the tumultuous Eastern European country on the brink of collapse in 1989. Emil Brod, now chief of the People's Militia and days from retirement, finds his past dramatically resurfacing. An early case from the late 1940s, involving the arrest of a powerful revolutionary leader, reemerges to haunt him and his colleagues. Young and naive at the time, Emil won a major victory against a formidable opponent, but the true consequences of his actions are only now becoming terrifyingly clear. As the forty-year-old government crumbles around him, and the very leaders who rose to power in the series' debut, "The Bridge of Sighs," face their downfall, Emil realizes his past triumph may now cost him and others their lives. Steinhauer masterfully blends personal vengeance with political intrigue, delivering a gripping tale of crime, power, and a nation's reckoning.
