Synopsis

Joseph Schwartz, a humble, retired tailor from 1949 Chicago, finds his life irrevocably altered when a freak laboratory accident catapults him 50,000 years into the future. He awakens on an Earth that is a mere 'pebble in the sky,' a despised backwater planet at the fringes of the vast Trantorian Galactic Empire. Earth's inhabitants are treated with disdain by the 200 million other worlds, largely due to their radioactive, impoverished state and a peculiar tradition: mandatory euthanasia at age sixty. Schwartz, at sixty-two, is immediately marked for death. Caught in a web of political intrigue, xenophobia, and a desperate struggle for survival, he inadvertently becomes a pawn in a larger conflict between a proud, dying Earth and the all-encompassing Empire. Asimov's debut novel masterfully explores themes of cultural clash, identity, and the struggle against overwhelming odds, setting the stage for the groundbreaking Galactic Empire and Foundation sagas.

Critical Reception

"As Isaac Asimov's debut novel, 'Pebble in the Sky' is recognized as a foundational pillar of Golden Age science fiction and the inaugural work that launched the iconic Galactic Empire universe."
