Young Lerris, a resident of the meticulously ordered island of Recluce, finds himself at a crossroads. Unsuited to the rigid structure of his home, he faces a stark choice: permanent exile or the perilous 'dangergeld.' This dangergeld is a mandatory wanderjahr, a journey into the unpredictable and chaotic lands beyond Recluce's shores, undertaken by those deemed unaligned with the island's strict principles. Many who embark on this journey never return. Lerris chooses the dangergeld, driven by a yearning for a place where his unique skills and temperament might find purpose. However, the world outside Recluce is dominated by the uncontrolled and destructive power of Chaos Wizards. To survive, Lerris must not only confront these formidable foes but also discover and master his own latent magical abilities, learning to channel them in an orderly fashion before he succumbs to the very Chaos he seeks to escape.
