Synopsis

Walter Neff, a jaded but successful insurance salesman, finds his meticulously ordinary life irrevocably shattered the moment he steps into the opulent home of the seductive Phyllis Nirdlinger. Her alluring charm and veiled desperation quickly ensnare him, drawing him into a web of illicit desire and deadly ambition. Driven by a potent mix of lust and greed, Phyllis manipulates Walter into devising a seemingly foolproof plan: to murder her husband, Mr. Nirdlinger, and collect on a double indemnity insurance policy that Walter himself engineered. What begins as a cynical scheme for a "perfect murder" rapidly spirals into a suffocating nightmare of paranoia, suspicion, and betrayal. As the brilliant but relentless claims adjuster Barton Keyes closes in, Walter finds himself trapped in a fatal dance of wits, where every step taken to cover their tracks only tightens the noose around his own neck. Cain's masterful narrative plunges the reader into the dark underbelly of human nature, exploring the destructive power of obsession and the chilling consequences of a life consumed by avarice.
