Synopsis

In James Lee Burke's atmospheric and haunting 'In the Electric Mist with Confederate Dead,' Detective Dave Robicheaux finds himself ensnared in a web of past and present evils in the steamy, spectral landscape of rural Louisiana. While pursuing a brutal serial killer preying on young women, Robicheaux is sidetracked by the unwelcome return of his childhood friend, now mobster Julie 'Baby Feet' Balboni, who is financing a Civil War film nearby. The film crew's discovery of a skeleton in the bayou dredges up a thirty-year-old lynching, seemingly linked to a Confederate general and, disturbingly, to Balboni himself. As the lines between history, myth, and a chilling present blur, Dave must navigate treacherous political currents, confront his own demons, and face down powerful adversaries. With the ghosts of the past refusing to stay buried, Robicheaux races against time to protect his community and loved ones, even as the electric mist seems to whisper tales of violence and redemption.

Critical Reception

"Often hailed as a masterpiece of modern crime fiction, the novel is celebrated for its poetic prose, morally complex characters, and its profound exploration of the American South's haunted history."
