Synopsis

In the vibrant, yet economically bleak landscape of late 1980s Dublin, 'The Van' plunges into the lives of Jimmy Rabbitte, perpetually unemployed, and his best mate Bimbo, recently made redundant after decades of dedicated work. As money dwindles and options evaporate, a serendipitous discovery – a dilapidated old 'chipper van' – sparks an improbable entrepreneurial dream. The two friends, facing mid-life crises and dwindling prospects, decide to pool their meager resources and open a mobile fish-and-chip shop. What follows is a hilarious, heartwarming, and often poignant journey through the trials and tribulations of small business ownership, set against the backdrop of an Ireland grappling with social change and economic hardship. Their venture becomes a greasy, chaotic, yet deeply personal testament to resilience, the enduring bonds of male friendship, and the unwavering pursuit of dignity amidst adversity, all served with a generous dollop of Roddy Doyle's signature wit and authentic dialogue.

Critical Reception
