Synopsis

In 'The Troubled Man,' Detective Kurt Wallander faces perhaps his most personal and unsettling case yet, delving into the shadowy history of his own family. The narrative begins when Håkan von Enke, a retired naval officer and father of Wallander's future son-in-law, mysteriously vanishes during his morning walk in Stockholm. Though not officially on the case, Wallander is drawn into the investigation due to the familial connection, a bond soon tested as Håkan's wife also disappears. Wallander recalls a recent conversation where Håkan alluded to a controversial incident from his past, hinting at Cold War-era espionage and submarine incursions into Swedish waters. As Wallander pieces together fragments of a meticulously concealed life, he finds himself navigating a labyrinth of state secrets, betrayals, and long-buried grievances that threaten to unravel not only Håkan's past but also Wallander's own peace of mind. This poignant final installment in the Wallander series forces the aging detective to confront the painful realization that even those closest to us can harbor profound, unknowable secrets, leaving him to grapple with the fragility of trust and the haunting specter of time's relentless march.
