Synopsis

In 1930s Mexico, during a ruthless anti-clerical purge, an unnamed, morally flawed Catholic priest—often referred to as the 'whisky priest'—finds himself the last of his kind in a state vehemently opposed to religion. Haunted by his sins, including a love for alcohol and the existence of an illegitimate child, he is relentlessly pursued by a zealous lieutenant determined to execute him. Despite his profound self-loathing and yearning for escape, a deep-seated compassion and an ingrained sense of duty compel him to repeatedly risk his life to administer the sacraments to his impoverished and isolated flock. His desperate flight through the desolate landscape becomes a harrowing pilgrimage, forcing him to confront the complex interplay of faith, sin, and redemption, ultimately leading him towards an inescapable, yet profoundly meaningful, destiny. Greene's masterpiece is a penetrating examination of what it truly means to be a good man, or indeed, a saint.
