Synopsis

In Yukio Mishima’s penultimate novel, "The Temple of Dawn," the astute, rational lawyer Honda continues his lifelong quest to understand the elusive nature of reincarnation. Set against the vibrant backdrop of 1960s Thailand and India, this third installment of the "Sea of Fertility" tetralogy finds Honda, now an older, more cynical man, on a legal assignment in Bangkok. There, he encounters the captivating young Thai princess, "Moonlight" (Ying Chan), whose striking beauty and preternatural wisdom deeply resonate with him. Convinced she is the latest reincarnation of his deceased friend Kiyoaki, and the previous incarnations he has pursued, Honda's intellectual curiosity spirals into an all-consuming obsession. He embarks on a spiritual pilgrimage to the sacred sites of India, only to confront her again, a figure embodying not only the cyclical nature of existence but also the painful reality of what remains forever beyond his grasp. "The Temple of Dawn" is a profound exploration of spiritual transformation, the passage of time, and the relentless pursuit of an ideal that forever eludes rational comprehension.

Critical Reception

"Renowned for its philosophical depth and exquisite prose, 'The Temple of Dawn' stands as a powerful testament to Mishima's literary genius and his elegiac reflection on Japan's shifting spiritual landscape."
