Synopsis

Set in a darkly humorous and disturbingly plausible near-future, "Jennifer Government" plunges into a world where globalization and corporate power have reached their extreme zenith. Taxation has been abolished, the government is privatized and underfunded, and individuals adopt their employers' names, creating a society driven entirely by market forces. The story follows Hack Nike, a low-level merchandising officer tasked with generating buzz for a new line of $2500 sneakers by orchestrating violent customer ambushes. His actions, however, catch the attention of the enigmatic Jennifer Government, a stressed-out single mother and a desperate, under-resourced government agent, whose department is literally having a 'closing down sale' to fund its operations. As Hack's deadly stunts escalate and Jennifer struggles to assert authority in a system that monetizes justice, the novel unravels a thrilling and outrageous satire of capitalism, consumerism, and the very nature of governance, questioning where the line between corporate enterprise and human value truly lies.

Critical Reception

"Max Barry's "Jennifer Government" is hailed as a wickedly satirical and outrageously clever thriller that incisively critiques globalization and marketing hype, solidifying its place as a cult classic of dystopian corporate fiction."
