Dark Horse

Synopsis

In Gregg Hurwitz's "Dark Horse," Evan Smoak, known as Orphan X and now operating as The Nowhere Man, finds himself in a precarious position. Having barely survived a brutal attack on his life and the destruction of his sanctuary, coupled with a deepening, complex relationship with his neighbor Mia Hall, Evan is reluctant to take on another mission. However, one finds him regardless, pushing him into a moral quagmire. His new client is Aragon Urrea, a powerful South Texas drug kingpin who, despite his illicit activities, acts as a benevolent patron to his community, providing aid and a semblance of justice. Urrea is desperate: his innocent eighteen-year-old daughter has been kidnapped by a rival, notoriously vicious cartel, spirited away into their impregnable, heavily fortified Mexican headquarters. Evan must now not only devise an impossible plan to infiltrate this fortress and rescue the girl but also grapple with the profound ethical dilemma of aiding a dangerous man, even if the cause is undeniably just. This mission tests the very core of The Nowhere Man's code, forcing him to confront the blurred lines between good and evil.
