Synopsis

In the quiet, seemingly idyllic town of Milburn, New York, four prominent old men — members of the exclusive 'Chowder Society' — regularly gather to share terrifying tales, some true, some embellished. Yet, a far more chilling story, one they desperately try to suppress, binds them together: a shared, horrific secret from their youth, an act of negligence and terror that led to a woman's death. Decades later, their past is not merely haunting them, but manifesting as a palpable, malevolent presence. As strange and violent deaths begin to plague Milburn, the men realize that the consequences of their long-buried sin have awakened a supernatural entity bent on revenge. Peter Straub masterfully weaves a complex tapestry of psychological dread, folk horror, and cosmic terror, as the protagonists confront the terrifying specter of their collective guilt and the insidious nature of evil that refuses to stay in the past.
