Synopsis

In Chetna Maroo's poignant debut, "Western Lane," we are introduced to Gopi, an eleven-year-old prodigy whose life has revolved around the rhythmic thud of a squash ball since childhood. When a devastating loss claims her mother, Gopi's world shifts dramatically. Her grief-stricken father channels his own sorrow into an intense and almost brutal training regimen for Gopi, transforming the squash court into both a sanctuary and a crucible. As the sport consumes her existence – each serve, volley, and drive dictating her days – Gopi finds herself slowly drifting from her two older sisters, caught in the singular pursuit of athletic perfection. Yet, within the confines of the court, she discovers a peculiar solace and connection: with her father, with the formidable thirteen-year-old talent Ged, and with the unseen legacy of players who have come before. This indelible coming-of-age narrative beautifully dissects themes of grief, the intricate bonds of sisterhood, and the arduous path to self-discovery, all while elevating the ordinary into something truly transcendent.
