Synopsis

Peter Benchley, the master of aquatic terror, returns to the deep with 'Beast,' a chilling tale set off the idyllic shores of Bermuda. When local fisherman Whip Dalton discovers the mangled remains of a yacht and its passengers, the initial assumption is a rogue shark attack. However, the sheer brutality and scale of the destruction point to something far more ancient and immense lurking beneath the waves. As more disappearances and gruesome discoveries pile up, it becomes terrifyingly clear that a colossal, aggressive giant squid has made the island its hunting ground. Dalton, alongside marine biologist Dr. Herbert Talley and a determined local official, must confront this prehistoric predator. Benchley crafts a relentless narrative, pitting man's ingenuity and courage against the unfathomable power of nature, exploring the primal fear of the unknown that lies in the ocean's depths, and reminding readers that humanity is not always at the top of the food chain.

Critical Reception

"While often overshadowed by 'Jaws,' 'Beast' further cemented Benchley's legacy as a preeminent purveyor of aquatic thrillers, captivating readers with its relentless suspense and terrifying, unseen antagonist."
