Synopsis

Curtis Sittenfeld reimagines Jane Austen's beloved classic, 'Pride and Prejudice,' in a hilariously tender and sharp contemporary setting. 'Eligible' introduces readers to the modern Bennet family, centered around Liz, a magazine writer in her late thirties, and her older sister Jane, a yoga instructor, both living in New York City. Their lives take an unexpected turn when a family health scare calls them back to their crumbling childhood home in Cincinnati. There, they find their eccentric family in delightful disarray: youngest sisters Kitty and Lydia are obsessed with CrossFit and Paleo diets, while middle sister Mary is pursuing multiple online degrees. Their mother, Mrs. Bennet, remains fixated on one goal: marrying off her daughters, especially as Jane approaches forty. Enter Chip Bingley, a charismatic doctor recently featured on a reality TV dating show, and his less-than-charming neurosurgeon friend, Fitzwilliam Darcy, setting the stage for a witty exploration of gender, class, courtship, and family dynamics in the 21st century.

Critical Reception

"Acclaimed as a 'New York Times Bestseller' and lauded by critics for its witty modernization, 'Eligible' masterfully redefines a beloved classic for the contemporary era, cementing Curtis Sittenfeld's reputation as a dazzling literary voice."
