Synopsis

In the vibrant yet slightly shabby literary circles of post-war London, 1949, aspiring writer Fleur Talbot finds herself caught in a web of intrigue and imagination. Employed by the peculiar Autobiographical Association, she is tasked with 'editing' the self-aggrandizing memoirs of its eccentric members. However, Fleur is secretly crafting her own novel, a darkly humorous tale titled 'Warrender Chase'. As she observes the bizarre goings-on at the Association, she's unnerved to discover that the fictional events she meticulously records in her manuscript begin to manifest in the real lives of those around her. When the Association's pompous and manipulative director, Sir Quentin Oliver, steals Fleur's manuscript, the line between art and reality blurs dangerously. 'Loitering with Intent' is a masterful and witty exploration of authorship, identity, and the potent, sometimes perilous, power of fiction to shape the world.

Critical Reception

"A quintessential work of metafiction, Muriel Spark's 'Loitering with Intent' is celebrated for its incisive wit, profound psychological depth, and audacious examination of the elusive boundary between art and life."
