Synopsis

In a single, hallucinatory night, Father Sebastian Urrutia Lacroix, a Chilean priest, Opus Dei member, literary critic, and mediocre poet, confronts the specters of his past as he believes he lies dying. His fevered delirium conjures a parade of figures, both real and imagined, who appear as chilling monsters in a phantasmagoric horror film. Among these apparitions are the towering poet Pablo Neruda, the enigmatic German novelist Ernst Jünger, and, most disturbingly, General Augusto Pinochet, whom Father Lacroix claims to have instructed in Marxist doctrine. Through these encounters, the novel dissects the compromised lives of the Chilean intelligentsia during a period of intense political upheaval and repression. Bolano masterfully weaves a searing indictment of moral complicity, the seductive power of art, and the intricate dance between intellect and political power, all through the lens of a fragmented, unreliable memory grappling with its own legacy.

Critical Reception

"Roberto Bolaño's "By Night in Chile" is a haunting and incisive novella, widely acclaimed for its unflinching examination of intellectual cowardice and moral compromise under a totalitarian regime, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of contemporary Latin American literature."
