Synopsis

In the vibrant, gritty underworld of Cork, Ireland, septuagenarian Maureen Phelan inadvertently kills an intruder with a Holy Stone, a desperate act that unravels a complex web of interconnected lives. Her estranged son, Jimmy Phelan, a feared crime boss, finds his empire threatened as his mother's bizarre attempts at atonement draw unwanted attention. Meanwhile, fifteen-year-old Ryan, a small-time drug dealer, struggles to escape the shadowed path of his alcoholic father, Tony, whose escalating feud with a neighbor threatens to consume their family. Georgie, a weary sex worker battling addiction, seeks a new beginning within a born-again movement. Lisa McInerney's "The Glorious Heresies" is a darkly humorous and biting debut novel, weaving these disparate narratives into a powerful examination of poverty, exploitation, and the unexpected glimmers of redemption found amidst the fringes of post-crash Irish society. It's a raw and unforgettable portrayal of characters fighting for survival and dignity in a morally ambiguous world.

"Lauded with the prestigious Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction and the Desmond Elliott Prize, "The Glorious Heresies" firmly established Lisa McInerney as a formidable voice in contemporary Irish literature and a significant new talent on the global stage."
