Synopsis

Set against the backdrop of a searingly satirical vision of America, DBC Pierre's "Vernon God Little" introduces us to fifteen-year-old Vernon Little, a cynical, foul-mouthed adolescent living in the fictional, godforsaken town of Martirio, Texas. When Vernon's best friend, Jesus Navarro, commits a horrific school shooting, Vernon quickly becomes the prime suspect, thrust into the unforgiving glare of media sensationalism and public judgment. Accused of being an accomplice and then framed for a murder he didn't commit, Vernon finds himself on the run, navigating a landscape of quirky, often grotesque characters and absurd situations, all while trying to clear his name and escape the death penalty. His journey leads him from the squalor of Martirio to the perceived glamour of Mexico, all under the pervasive, distorting lens of reality television. The novel is a darkly comedic, incisive critique of consumerism, trial by media, and the American Dream, as seen through the eyes of a precocious teenager struggling for survival and identity in a world gone mad.

Critical Reception

"Recipient of the prestigious Man Booker Prize, "Vernon God Little" exploded onto the literary scene as an international sensation, celebrated for its scathing social commentary and riotously funny, yet unsettling, portrayal of contemporary America."
