Synopsis

Picking up directly where *Wicked* left off, *Son of a Witch* plunges back into the turbulent land of Oz. The adolescent Liir, discovered bruised and comatose in the castle shadows following Dorothy's confrontation with the Wicked Witch of the West, is taken to the Cloister of Saint Glinda. There, a silent novice named Candle uses her haunting musical gifts to painstakingly nurse him back to life, willing him back from the precipice of death. As Liir slowly recovers, he is haunted by the formidable legacy of Elphaba – does her broom, her cape, and her enigmatic powers truly belong to him? Is he, in fact, her son, burdened by a destiny he scarcely understands? With the Wizard's departure, Oz finds itself under new, precarious management, teetering on the brink of political and social upheaval. Liir must navigate this dangerous landscape, grappling with his identity, his mysterious lineage, and the dark forces that left him for dead, all while trying to forge his own path in a world that simultaneously fears and reveres the memory of the Witch he may call mother.

Critical Reception

"Building upon the groundbreaking revisionist fairy tale of its predecessor, *Son of a Witch* further solidified Gregory Maguire's reputation for crafting complex, morally ambiguous narratives that deconstruct beloved fantasy worlds."
