Synopsis

In the perilous autumn of 1941 London, Freddie Hackett, a young messenger boy navigating the bombed-out streets, inadvertently stumbles upon a chilling argument that culminates in a brutal murder. Disregarded by the overburdened police, Freddie, burdened by the secret, turns to the astute and empathetic private investigator, Maisie Dobbs. While Maisie immediately believes the boy's account and feels compelled to help, her own clandestine work with a secret government department, orchestrating covert operations against the Nazi regime, demands extreme caution. As she delves deeper, the threads of the murder intertwine with the complex tapestry of wartime espionage, placing her in a precarious position. A shocking encounter with the killer in an utterly unexpected locale reveals a much deeper, more personal motive for the crime—one that stretches back to the shadows of a previous war and threatens to pull Maisie into a dangerous orbit from which there may be no escape.
