Synopsis

In the sprawling, high-tech universe of the Culture, a galactic enigma known as the Excession reappears after millennia of absence. This inscrutable, perfect black-body sphere, seemingly from another dimension, possesses properties that defy all known physics, threatening to shatter the delicate interstellar balance. The Culture’s omnipotent Artificial Intelligences, the Minds, initiate covert operations through their Special Circumstances division. Diplomat Genar-Hofoen is dispatched to investigate the artifact, but his mission is entangled by old personal relationships, the erratic behavior of fellow operative Ulver Seich, and the systematically depraved civilization known as the Affront, whose violent expansionism seeks to exploit the Excession. As the Minds engage in a complex, multi-layered game of diplomacy, manipulation, and near-warfare, 'Excession' delves into the moral quandaries of god-like power, the ethics of intervention, and the profound questions raised by an artifact that challenges the very understanding of existence itself.

Critical Reception

""Excession" is widely celebrated as a pivotal and intensely complex entry in Iain M. Banks's seminal Culture series, lauded for its intricate plotting, profound philosophical questions, and the distinctive, powerful voices of its sentient starships."
