Synopsis

Cast out of Eleanor of Aquitaine's royal court and deemed unfit for marriage or courtly life, a formidable seventeen-year-old Marie de France is dispatched to England. Her new charge: an impoverished abbey, its nuns on the verge of starvation and disease. Initially overwhelmed by the austerity, Marie soon finds purpose and profound connection within the collective life of her singular sisters. As she sheds her youthful desires for family and homeland, Marie dedicates herself to devotion, her own divine visions, and the well-being of her community. Born into a lineage of women warriors, Marie is determined to forge a new path for the women under her protection, cultivating an unconventional spiritual and physical haven. However, in a world increasingly hostile to female autonomy and power, Marie's unwavering vision and strength are tested. Groff masterfully intertwines violence, sensuality, and religious ecstasy, presenting a mesmerizing portrait of consuming passion, aberrant faith, and the enduring force of female creativity in a corrupt world.
