Mary Lennox, a sickly and unpleasant 10-year-old girl, is orphaned in India and sent to live with her reclusive uncle, Archibald Craven, at his sprawling, isolated estate, Misselthwaite Manor, in Yorkshire. The manor is full of secrets, including a locked garden and the mysterious cries Mary hears at night. Initially resentful and lonely, Mary slowly begins to explore her new surroundings. She befriends Martha Sowerby, a kindly housemaid, and her brother, Dickon, a boy with an almost magical connection to animals and nature. With their help, and the guidance of a friendly robin, Mary discovers the entrance to a long-forgotten, walled garden, which has been locked for ten years since her uncle's wife died there. As Mary, Dickon, and later, the surprisingly spoiled and bedridden Colin Craven (Mary's cousin), secretly work to bring the neglected garden back to life, they find themselves transformed by its magic. The garden becomes a symbol of healing and renewal, not just for the plants within its walls, but for the emotionally stunted children and the grieving family.
